Berrettini, Goffin Advance in Shanghai; Gauff, Badosa Prevail in Beijing
Thursday’s action at the Rolex Shanghai Masters saw former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini advance to the second round, defeating Christopher O’Connell 7-6(9), 7-6(6).
Using his booming serve to great effect, Berrettini slammed 11 aces, won 75 percent of his first serve points and hit 33 aces in total.
Winning three titles this season, Berrettini will next face No. 12 seed Holger Rune in round of 64 action.
Elsewhere, former top tenner David Goffin needed one hour and 27 minutes to dispatch James Duckworth 6-4, 6-2.
Goffin, who has been a shadow of himself the last few years, stands at 12-14 on the year. The Belgium star with six career titles will next face No. 15 seed Lorenzo Musetti.
Other results on the day saw Zizou Bergs ending the hopes of home-country hero Zhizhen Zhang, Marcos Giron defeating Li Tu and Jakub Mensik ousting Pedro Martinez 6-1, 5-7, 6-4.
Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic are the three featured players in this year’s Rolex Shanghai Masters. The eighth Masters 1000 level event of the season takes place from October 2 – 13, 2024.
Gauff, Badosa Reach Beijing Semifinals
Former US Open winner Coco Gauff needed three sets to reach the semifinals in Beijing, China on Thursday, defeating Yuliia Starodubtseva 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Needing one hour and 51 minutes to advance, Gauff hit two aces, won 79 percent of her first serve points and broke serve on five occasions.
Gauff will next face No. 15 seed Paula Badosa. The Spaniard continued her resurgent season by ousting Shuai Zhang 6-1, 7-6(4).
Friday’s other quarterfinals will feature No. 1 seed Aryna Sabalenka vs. Karolina Muchova No. 5 seed Qinwen Zheng vs. No. 17 seed Mirra Andreeva.
