Barty Wins WTA Finals; Djokovic Captures Fifth Paris Masters Title

WTA Finals—Shenzhen, China

World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty won the biggest title of her career on Sunday in Shenzhen, China, defeating inform Ukrainian Elina Svitolina 6-4, 6-3. Needing one hour and 27 minutes to prevail, Barty won 66 percent of her serve points, hit one ace and broke serve on four occasions. Capturing her first win against Svitolina in six meetings, Barty won her maiden Grand Slam earlier this year at the French Open.

The 23-year-old also won the biggest purse ever in tennis at $4.42 million.

Svitolina, who was looking to defend her title, was undefeated during the tournament en route to the finals.

Rolex Paris Masters—Paris, France

Top seed Novak Djokovic won his fifth title of 2019 on Sunday in Paris, France, upending Canadian Denis Shapovalov 6-3, 6-4 for his fifth Rolex Paris Masters crown. In a straight forward encounter, Djokovic broke serve once in each set to improve to 4-0 against his Canadian opponent. Winning 81 percent of his first serve points, Djokovic withstood 11 aces and a strong first serve by Shapovalov during the one hour and five minute affair. Djokovic also held his opponent to 18 percent of second serve points won.

The Serb now owns 77 career titles and is in prime position to finish No. 1 this year.

Shapovalov, who was playing in his first Masters 1000 final, advanced when Spaniard Rafael Nadal withdrew before their semifinal match. Shapovalov recently won his maiden title in Stockholm, Sweden. The Canadian is currently ranked No. 28 in the world.
