Australian Open—Melbourne, Australia
World No. 1 and Australian hero Ash Barty thrilled the Melbourne crowd on Saturday by winning her first-ever Australian Open title. Defeating American Danielle Collins 6-3, 7-6(2), Barty needed one hour and 27 minutes to seal her victory.
Never losing a set throughout the entire event, Barty hit 10 aces, won 82 percent of her first serve points and broke her opponent on three occasions. Hitting 30 winners in total, Barty now owns three Grand Slam titles and is without question the best women’s player in the world.
The 25 year old is also the reigning Wimbledon champion and captured the Roland Garros crown in 2019.
Collins, who entered the event as the 27th seed, was appearing in her first-ever Major final. The feisty American dispatched a slew of impressive players throughout the tournament, including former French Open winner Iga Swiatek and 19th seed Elise Mertens.
As a result of her finals appearance, Collins will jump 20 places in the rankings on Monday and debut in the top 10 at No. 10.
