Navarro Reaches US Open Semifinals Over Badosa
Tuesday’s results at the US Open featured No. 11 seed Emma Navarro reaching her first-ever Major semifinal, defeating Spaniard Paula Badosa 6-2, 7-5.
Needing one hour and 12 minutes to advance, Navarro used her forehand and foot speed to strike 12 winners, 100% of her points at net and broke serve on five occasions.
Tying her head-to-head with Badosa at 1-1 in lifetime meetings, Navarro will next face No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka or Olympic Gold Medalist Qinwen Zheng for a place in the finals.
Sabalenka leads the pairs head-to-head meetings 2-0. The Belarusian defeated the Chinese star in the finals of this year’s Australian Open.
Men’s Quarterfinals Preview
Two spots in the men’s semifinals will be on the line today in New York City. First up, American Taylor Fritz will take a 4-5 head-to-head deficit against No. 4 seed Alexander Zverev.
Fritz, who has never reached the semifinals of a Major, defeated No. 8 seed Casper Ruud in the fourth round.
Zverev, who will be looking to win his first-career Grand Slam at the US Open, reached the finals of Roland Garros in the Spring.
The night session will be highlighted by a dynamic encounter featuring No. 9 seed Grigor Dimitrov taking on No. 20 seed and tournament favourite, Frances Tiafoe.
Tiafoe, who desperately wants to win his first-ever Major, will take a 1-3 head-to-head deficit against his Bulgarian opponent.
The American has reached the quarterfinals in New York on three straight occasions. He defeated No. 13 seed Ben Shelton and No. 28 seed Alexi Popyrin earlier in the event.
Dimitrov is also in search of his first Major. The 33-year-old needed five sets to defeat Andrey Rublev in the fourth round.
