Anisamova Reaches National Bank Open Final; Korda Advances to Montreal Semifinals
Sunday’s semifinal action at the National Bank Open in Toronto, Canada featured American Amanda Anisamova ousting countrywoman Emma Navvaro 6-3, 2-6, 6-2.
In a match that lasted one hour and 55 minutes, Anisamova struck four aces, won 73 percent of her first serve points and broke serve on four occasions.
Anisamova had defeated No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka in the quarterfinals. She will move up to a minimum of No. 49 in the world after her semifinal victory.
Reaching the quarterfinals of Wimbledon and the fourth round of Roland Garros this year, Navvaro will next set her sights on competing at the Cincinnati Open in Mason, Ohio.
Anisamova will next face either defending champion Jessica Pegula or tournament upstart Diana Shnaider.
Shnaider upset top seed Coco Gauff in the third round. She recently won the Olympic Silver Medal with her Russian partner Mirra Andreeva.
Montreal Results
Recent Washington, D.C. winner Sebastian Korda kept his winning streak alive on Sunday in Montreal, Canada, defeating No. 2 seed Alexander Zverev 7-6(5), 1-6, 6-4 .
Needing two hours and 19 minutes to progress, Korda smashed seven aces, hit 19 winners and broke the serve of his German opponent on four occasions.
The American will next face Alexi Popyrin for a place in the finals.
Later in the day, Popyrin defeated Hubert Hurkacz 3-6, 7-6(5), 7-5 in two hours and 48 minutes.
Hurkacz was returning to action after recent knee surgery.
Popyrin dismissed Grigor Dimitrov and Ben Shelton earlier in the event.
