Monday’s Labour Day action at the US Open featured world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz advancing to the quarterfinals of the event, defeating Matteo Arnaldi 6-3, 6-3, 6-4.
The defending champion will next face his either Jannik Sinner or Alexander Zverev.
Elsewhere, world No. 3 Jessica Pegula was ousted by former finalist and No. 17 seed Madison Keys 6-1, 6-3. Keys will now take on reigning Wimbledon winner Marketa Vondrousova.
Vondrousova took out Peyton Stearns 6-7(3), 6-3, 6-2.
Other results on the day included No. 8 seed Andrey Rublev dispatching Jack Draper in four sets.
Later in the day, No. 5 seed Ons Jabeur lost to No. 23 seed Qinwen Zheng 6-2, 6-4 and new world No. 1 Aryna Sabaleka easily dismissed Daria Kasatkina, 6-1, 6-3. Jabeur had made the finals last year.
On the men’s side, No. 3 seed Daniil Medvedev came back from a first set loss to defeat No. 13 Alex de Minaur.
The final match of the day saw No. 12 seed Alexander Zverev needing four hours and 41 minutes to defeat No. 6 Jannik Sinner 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
Tuesday’s blockbuster schedule will be highlighted by Novak Djokovic vs. Taylor Fritz, Coco Gauff taking on Jelena Ostapenko, and Frances Tiafoe vs. Ben Shelton.
