US Open 2025 Semifinal Preview: Stars Align as Sabalenka, Pegula, Osaka & Anisimova Chase the Final

Thursday’s Previews and Results from the 2025 US Open

Thursday’s action at the 2025 US Open will feature a rematch last year’s final between top seed Aryna Sabalenka and No. 4 seed Jessica Pegula, and No. 8 seed Amanda Anisimova taking on two-time former winner and No. 23 seed Naomi Osaka.

Sabalenka has had an easy road to the semifinals, highlighted by four, straight set victories and a walkover win against Marketa Vondrousova in the quarterfinals.

Reaching the semifinals or better at every Major this year, Sabalenka will be adamant on capturing at least one Grand Slam title before the season is complete. The Belorussian leads Pegula 7-2 in career head-to-head meetings. Sabalenka defeated Pegula in straight sets to win the 2024 US Open title.

The day’s second semifinal will feature Anisimova taking on Osaka. The American, who avenged a loss to Iga Swiatek in the Wimbledon finals, owns a 2-0 series lead over Osaka. Defeating the Japanese star at both the French and Australian Opens, Anisimova is currently playing the best tennis of her career.

The 24-year-old also defeated No. 18 seed Beatriz Haddad Maia earlier in the event.

Osaka, who is up to No. 14 in the world with her run to the semifinals, will be looking to win her fifth Major this weekend. She recently made the finals of the Montreal Masters in Canada, losing to Victoria Mboko.

Sabalenka and Pegula will begin tonight’s night session, followed by Anisimova vs. Osaka.

Men’s Semifinal Preview: Will Djokovic Upset a Sinner vs. Alcaraz Final?

Friday’s highly anticipated men’s semifinals at the US Open will feature top seed and defending champion Jannik Sinner facing No. 23 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime, and No. 2 seed Carlos Alcaraz going up against No. 6 seed Novak Djokovic.

Continuing to roll through his opponents this event, Sinner followed up his thrashing of Alexander Bublik by easily dispatching No. 10 seed Lorenzo Musetti in three, easy sets.

Trailing the Canadian 2-1 in career matches, Sinner recently defeated Auger-Aliassime 6-0, 6-2 at the Cincinnati Open in Mason, Ohio.

Remaining the overwhelming favourite to take the title this weekend, Sinner should advance over Auger-Aliassime in three comfortable sets.

The day’s first match will feature a blockbuster between Alcaraz and Djokovic. Facing off for the ninth time in their careers, Djokovic currently leads Alcaraz 5-3 in career meetings.

Djokovic has won the last two encounters against Alcaraz and has never lost to the Spaniard on hard-courts.

Alcaraz has made the finals of the last seven events that he’s played, and has recorded an impressive 59-6 win/loss record on the season.

Djokovic, who has pretty much only played the Grand Slams this year, has made the semifinals of all four. The 38-year-old stands at 31 wins and nine losses on the year.

Djokovic will be eager to win his 25th career Major this weekend, and to do it, he will likely have to defeat the world No. 2 and world No. 1 ranked players in succession.
