Shapovalov, Badosa Advance in Adelaide; Borges Wins in Auckland; Kudermetova Moves on in Hobart
Canadian Denis Shapovalov advanced to the second round of the Adelaide International on Monday, defeating No. 9 seed Zhizhen Zhang 6-3, 6-4.
Needing one hour and seven minutes to advance, Shapovalov hit nine aces, won 97 percent of his first serve points and broke his Chinese opponent on two occasions.
Losing in the first round of Hong Kong last week to Kei Nishikori, Shapovalov will next face either Aleksander Vukic or Marcos Giron.
Other winners on the day included former winner Thanasi Kokkinakis, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Christopher O’Connell.
Tuesday’s action will feature Alexander Bublik, No. 7 seed Brandon Nakashima and No. 8 seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry.
On the women’s side, fan favourite Paula Badosa needed two hour and 42 minutes to advance past Peyton Stearns, 6-7(5), 6-3, 7-5.
Badosa will next face either Marta Kostyuk or Ashlyn Krueger.
Other winners on the day saw No. 3 seed Daria Kasatkina, Marketa Vondrousova, Ekaterina Alexandrova, Emerson Jones and Yulia Putintseva all reached the second round.
On Tuesday, No. 4 seed Danielle Collins, No. 7 seed Anna Kalinskaya, No. 8 seed Jelena Ostapenko, Maria Sakkari and Madison Keys will all be in action.

Portuguese star Nuno Borges needed over two hours to reach the second round of the ASB Classic on Monday, defeating Italian Luciano Darderi 5-7, 6-3, 7-5.
Winning his second match of the season, Borges will next face Adrian Mannarino or Mariano Navone for a place in the quarterfinals.
Other winners on the day were highlighted by No. 8 seed Alex Michelsen, Zizou Bergs and Roberto Carballes Baena.
Tuesday’s schedule will feature No. 6 seed Flavio Cobolli, Cameron Norrie, Gael Monfils and Jakub Mensik.
American Ben Shelton is the tournament top seed. He will play either Mensik or recent Hong Kong winner Alexandre Muller in round two.
Defending champion Alejandro Tabilo is also in the field.

Unseeded Veronika Kudermetova reached the second round of the Hobart International on Monday, dismissing Elisabetta Cocciaretto from Italy 7-5, 6-0.
Amassing nearly eight million in prize money throughout her career, Kudermetova needed one hour and 48 minutes to advance.
Hitting three aces and winning 74 percent of her first serve points, Kudermetova will next face Camila Osorio from Colombia. Osorio ousted No. 8 seed Yue Yuan 6-2, 6-3.
Other winners on the day featured No. 6 seed Elina Avanesyan, Greet Minnen, Maria Lourdes Carle, Anna Bondar and Mccartney Kessler.
Tuesday’s schedule will see top seed Dayana Yastremska, No. 2 seed Elise Mertens, No. 3 seed Amanda Anisamova, and No. 4 seed Magda Linette on court.
