The Italian Caps Off a Tremendous Year at Davis Cup
Malaga, Spain—World No. 1 Jannik Sinner sealed Italy’s third career Davis Cup Final victory on Sunday in Malaga, Spain, defeating Tallon Griekspoor 7-6(2), 6-2. Italy defended their title for 2023.
In a match that lasted one hour and 31 minutes, Sinner used his trademark power and consistency to hit 15 aces, win 80 percent of his first serve points and break his Dutch opponent on three occasions.
Completing his 73rd singles victory of the season in style, Sinner ends the year with eight singles titles and the Davis Cup crown.
Griekspoor had defeated Jan-Lennard Struff from Germany in the semifinals to secure the finals position for his team.
Earlier in the day, Matteo Berrettini gave his Italian squad the 1-0 lead by ousting Botic van de Zandschulp 6-4, 6-2.
Berrettini, also known for his power on court, needed to be careful against his tricky opponent during the one hour and 16 minute encounter.
Berrettini ends the year with three singles titles on clay and won final on grass in Stuttgart, Germany. He slammed 16 aces, 12 winners and won 86 percent of his first serve points.
Van de Zandschulp had defeated Rafael Nadal and Daniel Altmaier earlier in the week to aid the Netherlands into the final.
The Netherlands were making their first appearance in the Davis Cup final since appearing in the competition for the first time in 1920.
