Muchova Reaches US Open Semifinals
Czech star Karolina Muchova reached her second straight US Open semifinal on Wednesday in Flushing Meadows, New York, defeating Brazilian talent Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-1, 6-4.
Using her all-court game to great effect, Muchova struck 19 winners, two aces and broke the serve of the No. 22 seed on four occasions.
Improving to 3-0 against Haddad Maia in career meetings, Muchova will next face the winner of tonight’s highly anticipated encounter between world No. 1 Iga Swiatek and No. 6 seed Jessica Pegula.
Swiatek, who will be aiming to win her sixth Grand Slam this week, has been in fine form during the fortnight. The top seeded Pole hasn’t lost a set in four matches.
Peguala, who continues to strive for her first Major crown, recently captured the National Bank Open in Toronto, Canada and reached the finals of the Cincinnati Open in Mason, Ohio. Pegula also hasn’t lost a set en-route the quarterfinals.
Men’s Preview
On the men’s side, top seed Jannik Sinner will face No. 5 seed Daniil Medvedev under the lights, while No. 10 seed Alex de Minuar will take on No. 25 seed Jack Draper during the day session.
Sinner, who captured his first Grand Slam in Australia this year, trails Medvedev 7-5 in career head-to-head meetings. Sinner has reached the final eight with the loss of only one set.
Medvedev, who won the US Open in 2021, has made six Major finals. The Russian has also only lost one set entering tonight’s quarterfinal.
The day’s first quarterfinal will feature a fourth meeting between de Minuar and Draper. De Minaur currently owns a 3-0 head-to-head lead and enters the contest after playing three, four set matches.
Draper, who is appearing in his first-ever Grand Slam quarterfinal, hasn’t lost more than four games in any set entering today’s match up.
