Thursday’s action at Wimbledon saw Andrey Rublev overcome countryman Aslan Karatsev 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 to reach the third round. The 25-year-old will next face David Goffin or Marcelo Tomas Barrios Vera.
No. 4 seed and recent Roland Garros finalist Casper Ruud was defeated by Liam Broady 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0. Broady will take on Denis Shapovalov in the next round.
Elsewhere, No. 14 Lorenzo Musetti, No. 17 Hubert Hurkacz, No. 23 Alexander Bublik all advanced to the third round.
Former three-time Major winner Stan Wawrinka ousted No. 28 Tomas Martin Etcheverry 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 and will next face No. 2 Novak Djokovic on Friday.
In first-round results, No. 19 Alexander Zverev and No. 31 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina both advanced.
On the women’s side, 16-year-old phenom Mirra Andreeva advanced to the third-round when her opponent No. 10 seed Barbora Krejcikova was forced to retire trailing 4-0 in the second set.
Former US Open winner Bianca Andresscu reached the second round by overcoming Anna Bondar 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Andresscu will next face No. 26 seed Anhelina Kalinina for a place in the third round.
Other women’s results included No. 12 seed Veronika Kudermetova, No. 16 seed Karolina Muchova and No. 28 seed Elise Mertens were all ousted.
To finish off Thursday’s action, two-time former winner Andy Murray leads Stefanos Tsitsipas two sets to one before the curfew on Centre Court was called to postpone the action until Friday.
Also on Friday, Iga Swiatek, Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka are slated to compete.
