World No. 1 Iga Swiatek reached the third round of the US Open on Thursday, defeating former champion Sloane Stephens 6-3, 6-2. Needing one hour and 14 minutes to advance, Swiatek will next face American Lauren Davis for a place in the fourth round.
Swiatek, who is the reigning French Open winner, recorded a 37-match winning streak earlier this year.
Elsewhere, No. 8 seed Jessica Pegula, No. 13 seed Belinda Bencic, No. 21 seed Petra Kvitova and No. 26 seed Victoria Azarenka all advanced. No. 4 seed Paula Badosa wasn’t as lucky, losing to Petra Martic 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-2.
Still to come on Thursday, No. 6 seed Aryna Sabalenka and No. 9 seed Garbine Muguruza will be in action.
On the men’s side, unorthodox American Jenson Brooksby caused the upset of the day by dispatching recent Cincinnati winner Borna Coric 6-4, 7-6(10), 6-1. Needing three hours and six minutes to advance, Brooksby will next face No. 3 seed Carlos Alcaraz. The Spanish upstart dismissed Federico Coria in three sets.
Elsewhere, No. 11 seed Jannik Sinner, No. 15 seed Marin Cilic, No. 20 seed Daniel Evans and No. 28 seed Holger Rune all reached the third round.
Tonight’s night session will feature Rafael Nadal vs. Fabio Fognini.
Friday’s action at the US Open be highlighted by Serena Williams, Daniil Medvedev, Andy Murray, and Bianca Andresscu.
