Carreno Busta Captures Hamburg Title; Anderson Wins Newport Event; Ruud Claims Bastad Crown

Hamburg European Open–Hamburg, Germany

No. 2 seed Pablo Carreno Busta won the biggest title of his career on Sunday in Hamburg, Germany, dismissing No. 6 seed Filip Krajinovic 6-2, 6-4. In a straight forward contest, Carreno Busta hit three aces, won 81 percent of his first serve points and broke serve on three occasions. Never facing a break point, Carreno Busta tied his head-to-head meetings with Krajinovic at one a piece, while capturing his sixth career title.

Needing one hour and 22 minutes to prevail, Carreno Busta will move up to No. 11 in the world when Monday’s rankings are released.

Krajinovic, who was in search of his first career title, fell to 0-4 in championship matches. The Serb defeated top seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarterfinals.

Hall of Fame Open—Newport, RI, U.S.A.

Former Wimbledon and US Open finalist Kevin Anderson captured his seventh career title on Sunday in Newport, Rhode Island, over surprise finalist Jenson Brooksby 7-6(8), 6-4. Using his monster serve to offset the rhythm of his opponent, Anderson struck 16 aces and broke his American opponent on one occasion.

Winning his last title in Pune, India in 2019, Anderson has since been hit by a slew of injuries. Working his way back up the rankings, the South African will be ranked No. 74 in the world when Monday’s rankings are released. The 35-year-old entered the week ranked No. 113.

Brooksby, who qualified for Roland Garros earlier this year, enthralled the home-country crowd throughout the week with his unique style of play. The 20-year-old had previously won only one main tour match prior to the start of the Newport event. The California native will move up to a career high ranking of No. 126 when Monday’s rankings are released.

Top seed Casper Ruud breezed to his third career title on Sunday in Bastad, Sweden, dispatching Argentine Federico Coria 6-3, 6-3. Using his clay-court savvy game to great effect, Ruud struck three aces, won 81 percent of his first serve points and broke serve on five occasions.

Never facing his opponent on Tour, Ruud won his second title of 2021, and improved to 28-9 on the year. The Norwegian star will hit a career high of No. 14 in the world when Monday’s rankings are released.

Coria, who was playing in his first career final, defeated No. 2 seed Christian Garin in earlier in the event. The Argentine will be ranked No. 63 in the world on Monday.
