No. 3 seed Casper Ruud continued his impressive clay-court season on Saturday in Lyon, France, dismissing No. 2 seed Denis Shapovalov 7-6(6), 6-4. Needing one hour and 41 minutes to claim his second career title, Ruud overcame eight aces by his opponent, while winning 79 percent of his first serve points. Playing his Canadian opponent for the first time, Ruud will improve his ranking to No. 16 in the world on Monday (a career high).
The 21-year-old recently made the semifinals of the Roma Masters, the Munich Open, and the Monte Carlo Masters.
Shapovalov, who was aiming to win his second career title, defeated Pablo Cuevas in the semifinals. The Canadian will be ranked No. 14 on the computer when Monday’s rankings are updated.
