Djokovic Wins Japan Open; Thiem Crowned China Open Champion

Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships—Tokyo, Japan

Top seed and world No. 1 Novak Djokovic won his first-ever title in Tokyo, Japan on Sunday, defeating Australian John Millman 6-3, 6-2 in comprehensive fashion. Never losing a set throughout the week, Djokovic hit six aces during the one hour and nine minute match and won 87 percent of his first serve points. Never facing a break point, Djokovic improved to 3-0 against Millman in lifetime meetings.

Millman, who was in search of his first-career title, fell to 0-2 in championship matches. The qualifier defeated hard-serving American Reilly Opelka in the semifinals.

China Open—Beijing, China

Austrian star Dominic Thiem claimed his fourth title of 2019 on Sunday in Beijing, China, upending third seed Stefanos Tsitsipas 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Looking to regain the form that saw him win in Indian Wells earlier this year and reach the French Open final, Thiem overcame the loss of the first set before running away with the match against his inspired opponent. Breaking serve in the 10th game of the second set, Thiem then captured full momentum of the match by recording a decisive set scoreline.

Teammates just two weeks ago at the Laver Cup, the two one-handed backhand players put on a great show in front of the appreciative crowd.

Tsitsipas, who was looking to claim his third title of 2019, last won on Tour earlier this year in Estoril, Portugal.
