Top seed Rafael Nadal captured his third US Open title on Sunday in Flushing Meadows, New York, defeating No. 28 seed Kevin Anderson 6-3, 6-3, 6-4. In a match that took 147 minutes to complete, Nadal broke serve for 5-3 in the first set and established his dominant form for the rest of the match. Striking 30 winners to 11 unforced errors, Nadal broke serve on four occasions and never faced a break point on his own delivery.
Winning his 16th Grand Slam title to solidifying his world No. 1 ranking, Nadal has now won five titles on the season, including the French Open in June.
Anderson, who was playing in his first-ever Grand Slam final, fell to 29-6 on the season. The 31-year-old South African debuted as the tallest ever Major finalist at 6’8″.
