Miami Open—Miami, Florida
New world No. 1 Iga Swiatek captured the Miami Open title on Saturday in Florida, defeating four-time Major winner Naomi Osaka 6-4, 6-0. After a back and fourth tussle in the first set, Swiatek established her ground game to great effect to breeze through set two.
Needing one hour and 19 minutes to prevail, Swiatek completed a glorious month of tennis, which included a recent title at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California.
Tying her head to head with Osaka at 1-1, Swiatek is currently on a 17-match winning streak.
Recently claiming the No. 1 ranking after the retirement of Ash Barty, Swiatek will next set her sights on capturing her second French Open title next month in Paris, France.
Osaka, who reached her first final since winning the 2021 Australian Open, was looking to claim her eighth title. The Japanese star will be ranked No. 36 in the world when Monday’s rankings are released.
