Montreal, June 8, 2021 – Bianca Andreescu announced today via her social media channels that she and her long-time coach Sylvain Bruneau, Tennis Canada’s Head of Women’s Pro and Transition Tennis, have mutually agreed to part ways.

While they had collaborated on a few occasions previously, the pair officially started working together in March 2018. Under Bruneau’s tutelage, Andreescu rose from No. 256 to a career-high No. 4 in the WTA rankings (October 2019) and won her first-career title at Indian Wells in 2019 before claiming the National Bank Open presented by Rogers—the first Canadian to do so in 50 years (Faye Urban). She followed that up by becoming the first Canadian in history to win a Grand Slam singles title at the US Open.

“It is with a heavy heart that I would like to inform my fans that my long-time coach, mentor and friend, Sylvain and I, have mutually decided to end our incredible coaching relationship,” Andreescu said in her social media post. “Our friendship will live forever… It has been an amazing 4 years… I am very grateful for everything we accomplished together and for all our great memories. Sylvain was more than a coach … he is family.”

“It has been an absolutely incredible journey to work with Bianca,” said Bruneau. “As her coach, I experienced unbelievable moments and emotions and it is something that I will always cherish. Bianca is not only an exceptional athlete, but she’s also an exceptional person. It was really a privilege to train her for the last few years. I wish her and her family all the very best for the future. I know that she will be extremely successful and that her best tennis is still ahead of her.”

“While this great chapter of my life and career is coming to a close, I’m happy that I will now be able to spend more time with my family moving forward,” added Bruneau. “I’m also excited for what’s next at Tennis Canada, as I will get additional time to help our team bring Canadian tennis to the next level.”

Note: Sylvain will not be commenting any further, or providing any interviews on the situation at this time.
