Monday’s action at the ATP Finals in Turin, Italy featured two-time former winner Alexander Zverev upsetting reigning Wimbledon winner Carlos Alcaraz, 6-7(3), 6-3, 6-4.
Needing two hours and 31 minutes to claim his victory, Zverev used his potent serve and world-class backhand to upend his higher-ranked opponent.
Improving to 4-3 against Alcaraz in lifetime meetings, Zverev currently stands at 1-0 in the Red Group.
Alcaraz will likely now have to go undefeated against Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev to reach the semifinals stage of the event.
Elsewhere, Medvedev needed two hard-hitting sets to dispatch his good friend Rublev during the evening session.
Winning the match 6-4, 6-2, the former US Open winner improved to 7-2 in lifetime meetings against his lower-ranked opponent. Medvedev also improved to 1-0 in the Red Group.
Tuesday’s schedule of play in Turin will see top seed Novak Djokovic take on home-country favourite Jannik Sinner in the night session, with No. 6 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas facing No. 8 seed Holger Rune during the day.
