Tuesday’s action at the National Bank Open in Toronto saw No. 13 seed Alexander Zverev roll into the second round, defeating recent Washington finalist Tallon Griekspoor 6-4, 7-6(3).
Zverev will next face Alejandro Davidovich Fokina for a place in round three.
Elsewhere, Marcos Giron, Ugo Humbert, Sebastian Korda, Mackenzie McDonald and Andy Murray all reached the second round.
Later tonight, birthday boy Felix Auger-Aliassime will take on Max Purcell from Australia, and No. 3 seed Casper Ruud will take on Jiri Lehecka.
Over in Montreal, former world No. 1 and Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki returned to action after over three and a half years to dispatch Kimberly Birrell 6-2, 6-2. The now 33-year-old will next face Wimbledon winner Marketa Vondrousova or Mayar Sherif.
In other results, Canadian Leylah Annie Fernandez, No. 11 Beatriz Haddad Maia, No. 14 Karolina Muchova, No. 15 Liudmila Samsonova, Alycia Parks and Danielle Collins all reached the second round.
Wednesday’s action in Toronto will feature top seed Carlos Alcaraz, No. 2 seed Daniil Medvedev and No. 5 seed Holger Rune. Montreal’s schedule of play will be highlighted by world No. 1 Iga Swiatek, No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka and No. 3 seed Jessica Pegula.
