Needing two hours and 38 minutes to advance, Zverev will next face local favourite Ugo Humbert.
Elsewhere, No. 11 seed Hubert Hurkacz continued his stellar Fall on Tour, ousting Sebastian Korda 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-3.
Recent Swiss Indoors winner Felix Auger-Aliassime defeated Jan-Lennard Struff in straight sets and Daniel Altmaier advanced to round there after No. 9 seed Taylor Fritz was forced to withdraw from the event with an abdominal injury.

In the shock of the day, No. 2 seed Carlos Alcaraz was ousted in straight sets by Roman Safiullin 6-3, 6-4. It was the first time that Alcaraz dropped his opening match of an event this season.
