Nitto ATP Finals—Turin, Italy
German star Alexander Zverev captured his second career ATP Finals title on Sunday in Turin, Italy, comprehensively defeating No. 2 seed Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 6-4. Needing a mere one hour and 15 minutes to claim his crown, Zverev gained early breaks of serve in each set and never looked back.
Hitting eight aces and winning 83 percent of his first serve points during the one hour and 13 minute encounter, Zverev broke serve on two occasions and never surrendered a break point to his opponent. Previously losing five straight matches to Medvedev before today’s victory, Zverev now leads the pair’s overall meeting 7-6.
Defeating Novak Djokovic, Matteo Berrettini and Hubert Hurkacz earlier in the event, Zverev lost a nail-biter to Medvedev in the group stages of the tournament.
According to Unibet, who offers a $500 risk-free bet for the new players, the odds on Zverev winning the upcoming Australian Open are 2.5 and for Medvedev 1.53.
Medvedev, who was looking to claim his second ATP Finals title, remained undefeated in the group stages, which included two final set tiebreaker wins over Jannik Sinner and Zverev.
The Russian, who won his first Major title in New York earlier this year, ends 2021 with four titles and the No. 2 ranking. Zverev ends the season with six titles (the most on Tour) and the No. 3 ranking.
Both players are hot on the heels of world No. 1 Djokovic as the 2022 season is set to kick off in six weeks.
The 2022 Australian Open will be held from January 17th – January 30th.
