Sunday’s opening day action at the French Open featured No. 3 seed Alexander Zverev, inform Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, No. 9 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime and No. 15 seed Diego Schwartzman all advance to the second round.
Canadian Auger-Aliassime avoided a first round exit by coming back from two sets to love, while Alcaraz continued to prove that he’s currently the best player in the world in 2022.
Former finalist and US Open winner Dominic Thiem was ousted in the first round, losing to unheralded Bolivian Hugo Dellien. Australian Open doubles champion Thanasi Kokkinakis was also ousted in five sets at the hands of Albert Ramos Vinolas. Ramos Vinolas will next face Alcaraz.
On the women’s side, fan-favourite and inform Ons Jabeur lost to Magda Linette 3-6, 7-6(4), 7-5, while former winner Garbine Muguruza exited the event to Kaia Kanepi 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
US Open runner-up Leylah Fernandez ended the day with victory over local favourite Kristina Mladenovic 6-0, 7-5.
