Japan and the Netherlands lead all nations with eight players each earning direct entry. The United States has four players in the field: two via direct entry and two via wild cards.
Two-time Paralympian Dana Mathewson, who recently won her first Grand Slam title in doubles at Wimbledon, will be representing the Americans in the women’s singles and doubles draws, while eight-time Paralympic medalist David Wagner will look to claim his fourth US Open title in the quad division.
Earlier this year, the USTA announced a historic expansion of the US Open Wheelchair Championships for 2022. The size of the women’s and men’s singles and doubles draws is doubling from eight singles players and four doubles teams to 16 women and 16 men, with eight doubles teams in each draw. In addition, the inaugural US Open Wheelchair Junior Championships will feature eight girls and eight boys in the singles draws and four doubles teams each.
The larger draw sizes for the professional wheelchair players provides more opportunities for them to compete on the Grand Slam stage and earn valuable ranking points and prize money. The increase in field size for the men’s and women’s wheelchair divisions is the single largest draw expansion in Grand Slam history, and the US Open is expanding a wheelchair field for the second consecutive year. In advance of the 2021 US Open, the quad draw was doubled in size from four to eight competitors.
The men’s, women’s and quad entries were based on the July 18 rankings. The women’s and men’s cutoffs were both at No. 14, with two wild cards in each division rounding out the 16-player field. The quad cutoff was at No. 7 and one wild card completed the field.
The 2022 US Open Wheelchair Championships take place Wednesday, Sept. 7 to Sunday, Sept. 11. The 2022 US Open main draw runs Monday, Aug. 29 to Sunday, Sept. 11, at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. Fan Week, which features the Qualifying Tournament, begins on Tuesday, Aug. 23.
