Next Gen ATP Finals presented by PIF—Saudi Arabia—Saturday’s results from the Next Gen ATP Finals in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia featured American Learner Tien defeating fellow American Alex Michelsen, and Brazilian sensation Joao Fonseca taking out Frenchman Luca Van Assche.
First up, Tien used his strong backhand and recent confidence to upend his countryman 2-4, 4-2, 1-4, 4-0, 4-1.
Needing one hour and 36 minutes to advance to Sunday’s final, Tien struck five aces, hit 21 winners and broke Michelsen’s serve on four occasions.
Tien, currently ranked No. 122 in the world, predominately played the Challenger circuit throughout 2024, winning seven titles. He amassed a 3-2 record on the main Tour.
He will take on Fonseca on Sunday.
The 18-year-old, from Rio de Janeiro, ousted Van Assche 4-2, 4-2, 4-1 in the day’s second match.
Fonseca used his powerful serve and all-court game to create 20 winners, six aces and break his opponent’s serve on four occasions.
Tien and Fonseca have played once on Tour, with the Brazilian winning earlier this week in round robin action in four sets.
This week’s eight player field was led by world No. 20 and 20-year-old Arthur Fils. Fils finished the competition with a 1-2 record, losing to both Tien and Fonseca.
