No. 5 seed Italian Jannik Sinner won the biggest title of his young career on Sunday in Washington, D.C., defeating first-time finalist Mackenzie McDonald 7-5, 4-6, 7-5. In a match that featured two baseline wizards, it was Sinner who grabbed a break of serve late in the first set, before dropping the second set to his inspired opponent. Striking nine aces and winning 72 percent of his first serve points, Sinner used his great temperament throughout the final set to capture the title.
Winning the title in Melbourne, Australia earlier this year, Sinner will be ranked No. 15 when Monday’s rankings are released. The 19-year-old now owns three titles on the ATP Tour.
McDonald, who was appearing in his first career final, defeated defending champion Nick Kyrgios in the first round and former winner Kei Nishikori in the semifinals. The 26-year-old American will be ranked No. 64 in the world when the latest rankings are released.
