Cincinnati Open—Mason, Ohio
Wednesday’s action at the Cincinnati Open featured world No. 1 Jannik Sinner progressing into the round of 16, defeating American Alex Michelsen 6-4, 7-5.
Needing one hour and 51 minutes to advance, Sinner slammed nine aces, won 74 percent of his first serve points and broke the serve of his opponent on two occasions.
Hitting 28 winners in total, Sinner will next face Jordan Thompson or Sebastien Baez for a place in the quarterfinals. Sinner lost in last eight of the Montreal Masters to eventual finalist Andrey Rublev.
Other results on the day saw No. 9 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas picking up a much-needed win over Jan-Lennard Struff.
Recently firing his dad as his coach, Tsitsipas has had mediocre results after winning the Rolex Monte Carlos Masters in the Spring.
Recording a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory, Tsitsipas will next face Jack Draper for a round of 16 birth.
Draper dispatched Jaume Munar 7-5, 3-6, 7-6(5) in two hours and 33 minutes.
No. 15 seed Holger Rune, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Fabian Marozsan, Max Purcell and Nuno Borges also advanced to the round of 32.
Badosa Continues to Shine
After capturing the title in Washington, D.C., Spaniard Paula Badosa continued her winning ways on Wednesday in Mason, Ohio.
Defeating Peyton Stearns 6-2, 7-5, Badosa will next face No. 13 seed Anna Kalinskaya for a place in the round of 32.
Kalinskaya ousted Katerina Siniakova 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Badosa is currently ranked No. 36 in the world.
Other women results on the day featured Diana Shnaider also reaching the round of 32.
Shnaider recently advanced to the semifinals of the National Bank Open in Toronto, Canada, defeating top seed Coco Gauff along the way.
No. 10 seed Liudmila Samsonova, Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, Taylor Townsend and Leylah Fernandez all reached the round of 32.
Tour upstart Mirra Andreeva continued her great season, defeating No. 11 seed Emma Navvaro 6-2, 6-2.
