Sinner Reaches 2024 US Open Third Round
Thursday’s action-packed day at the US Open began with top seed Jannik Sinner advancing to the round of 32, defeating American Alex Michelsen 6-4, 6-0, 6-2.
Needing one hour and 39 minutes to notch his victory, the reigning Australian Open winner struck three aces, won 81 percent of his first serve points and broke serve on eight occasions.
Improving to 50-5 on the year, Sinner will next face countryman Australian Christopher O’Connell for a place in the round of 16.
O’Connell dispatched Italian Mattia Bellucci 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
Sinner, who recently won the Cincinnati Open and is dealing with off-court drama with his recently settled doping case, will be looking to win his second Major of the season in New York.
Other men’s winners on the day included No. 30 seed Matteo Arnaldi and Tomas Machac.
Machac easily defeated No. 16 seed and recent Washington, D.C. winner Sebastian Korda 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 and Thompson dismissed No. 7 seed Hubert Hurkacz 7-6(2), 6-1, 7-5.
Still to come on Thursday, No. 3 seed Carlos Alcaraz, No. 5 seed Daniil Medvedev and No. 14 seed Tommy Paul will be in action.

Kalinskaya Reaches Round of 32
Russian tennis star Anna Kalinskaya raced into the third round of the US Open on Thursday, ousting Hungarian Anna Bondar 6-2, 6-4.
Currently ranked No. 15 in the world, Kalinskaya stands a 33-15 on the season. Winning 73 percent of her first serves points and breaking serve on four occasions, Kalinskaya will next face No. 22 seed Beatriz Haddad Maia or Sara Sorribes Tormo from Spain.
Other women’s winners on the day included No. 5 seed Jasmine Paolini, No. 18 seed Diana Shnaider and No. 30 seed Yulia Putintseva, Jessica Bouzas Maneiro and American Ashlyn Krueger.
Maneiro dispatched No. 31 seed Katie Boulter, and Krueger defeated No. 21 seed Mirra Andreeva 6-1, 6-4.
Two-time former winner Naomi Osaka will headline the night session in New York. The Japanese star will take on former French Open finalist Karolina Muchova.
Muchova recently returned to the Tour after having wrist surgery.
