Sinner, Alcaraz Reach Beijing Final; Fils Wins Tokyo Title
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner improved to 59-5 on the season on Tuesday in Beijing, China, defeating Yunchaokete Bu 6-3, 7-6(3) in two hours and five minutes.
Needing three match points to prevail, Sinner hit 11 aces, won 73 percent of his first serve points and added 31 winners to victory.
Bu, who had been playing the best tennis of his career the past two weeks in China, will move up to No. 69 in the world when the latest rankings are released.
The top seeded Italian will next face newly crowned world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz. The Spaniard needed two clean-cut sets to dismiss former US Open winner Daniil Medvedev 7-5, 6-3.
Alcaraz, who has been playing top-level tennis since losing in the second round of the US Open, improved to 6-2 against Medvedev in lifetime meetings.
The Spaniard will take a slight 5-4 head-to-head lead over Sinner into Wednesday’s championship match. Alcaraz has won both encounters against Sinner in 2024.
Zhang, Badosa Advance to Beijing Quarterfinals
Shuai Zhang continued her memorable run in Beijing on Tuesday, advancing to the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over No. 23 seed Magdalena Frech.
Entering the event, Zhang had lost 24-straight singles matches. She next faces No. 15 seed Paula Badosa for a place in the semifinals.
Badosa continued her resurgent season by ousting No. 2 seed and US Open finalist Jessica Pegula 6-4, 6-0.
Other results on the day saw Yuliia Starodubtseva defeating No. 10 seed Anna Kalinskaya 7-5, 6-0.
Still to come on Tuesday, No. 4 seed Coco Gauff will take on four-time Major winner Naomi Osaka.

Kinoshita Group Japan Open Tennis Championships—Tokyo, Japan
Frenchman Arthur Fils won his second title of the season in dramatic fashion on Tuesday in Tokyo, Japan, upending countryman Ugo Humbert 5-7, 7-6(6), 6-3.
Needing over three hours to seal his victory, Fils hit 10 aces, won 80 percent of his first serve points and struck 38 winners.
Picking up his first victory against Humbert in four career meetings, Fils will improve his ranking to No. 21 in world next Monday. The 20-year-old had also captured the title in Hamburg, Germany earlier this Summer.
Humbert, who was vying to claim his third title of the season, will be ranked No. 15 in the world on Monday.
Both Fils and Humbert will now shift their focus to the focus to the Rolex Shanghai Masters, which begins on Wednesday in China.
