Sinner, Alcaraz and Djokovic Reach Shanghai Quarterfinals; Sabalenka Advances in Wuhan
Wednesday’s action-packed day at the Rolex Shanghai Masters featured top ranked Jannik Sinner, No. 3 seed Carlos Alcaraz and No. 4 seed Novak Djokovic all advancing to the quarterfinals. First up, Sinner needed all of his experience and momentum to oust No. 14 seed Ben Shelton 6-4, 7-6(1).
Withstanding seven aces, Sinner poured in seven aces of his own and added 17 winners to his fourth victory over Shelton in five career meetings.
The world No. 1 will next face former US Open winner Daniil Medvedev for a place in the final four. The Russian defeated a frustrated Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-6(3), 6-3.
Elsewhere, reigning Wimbledon and French Open winner Alcaraz avenged a loss to Frenchman Gael Monfils later in the day by defeating the 38-year-old 6-4, 7-5. Monfils had defeated Alcaraz at the Cincinnati Open in August.
Improving to 51-9 on the year, Alcaraz will next face No. 30 seed Tomas Machac.
Machac upset No. 11 seed Tommy Paul 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Four-time former winner Djokovic also breezed into the quarterfinals on Wednesday, defeating Roman Safiullin 6-3, 6-2 in one hour and 13 minutes.
Cruising so far in the event, Djokovic added 17 winners to his victory and will next face Jakub Mensik.
Mensik, who has been widely recognized as a future top 10 player, dismissed No. 9 seed Grigor Dimitrov 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
Other results on the day featured David Goffin shocking No. 2 seed Alexander Zverev 6-4, 7-5 and No. 7 seed Taylor Fritz outclassing No. 12 seed Holger Rune 6-1, 6-2. The pair will face off on Friday for a semifinal birth.

No. 1 seed Aryna Sabalenka raced into the round of 16 of the Wuhan Open on Wednesday, defeating Katerina Siniakova 6-4, 6-4.
In a match that lasted one hour and 34 minutes, Sabalenka struck three aces, won 70 percent of her first serve points and broke serve on four occasions.
The two-time defending winner will next face Yulia Putintseva. Putintseva ousted Olympic Silver Medalist Donna Vekic 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
Other winners on the day included Erika Andreeva upsetting her sister and No. 16 seed Mirra in round of 32 action and No. 2 seed Jessica Pegula, No. 4 seed Coco Gauff, No. 5 seed Qinwen Zheng, No. 8 seed Daria Kasatkina No. 9 seed Beatriz Haddad Maia, No. 13 seed Marta Kostyuk and Canadian Leylah Fernandez all advancing.
No. 6 seed Emma Navarro, No. 7 seed Barbora Krejcikova and No. 10 seed Anna Kalinskaya were all ousted.
