Opening day at Roland Garros 2023 featured No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka advancing past Marta Kostyuk 6-3, 6-2 and No. 5 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas fighting past Jiri Vesely 7-5, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(7).
Sabalenka—the reigning Australian Open winner—will next face Iryna Shymanovich in the second round. Tsitsipas, who made finals of the event in 2021, will take on Roberto Carballes Baena, who dismissed Emilio Nava.
Elsewhere, No. 5 seed Andrey Rulbev, No. 11 seed Karen Khachanov and No. 13 seed Hubert Hurkacz all advanced to the second round. Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis upset No. 20 seed Daniel Evans 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.
On the women’s side, No. 24 seed Anastasia Potapova, No. 28 seed Elise Mertens advanced over Viktoria Hruncakova 6-1, 6-4 and No. 29 seed Zhang Shuai was upset by Magdalena Frech 6-1, 6-1. No. 8 seed Maria Sakkari was also ousted by Karolina Muchova 7-6(5), 7-5.
Monday’s action in Paris will feature No. 1 seed Carlos Alcaraz, No. 3 seed Novak Djokovic, No. 5 seed Caroline Garcia, and No. 12 seed Belinda Bencic.
