Montreal, June 23, 2014 – Vasek Pospisil (Vancouver, BC) and Aleksandra Wozniak (Blainville, QC) were the only two Canadians to take to the court on opening day at Wimbledon and neither were able to get through the first round.
Pospisil, who reached the second round last year in London, was unable to repeat that performance in 2014. He fell in four sets to Robin Haase of the Netherlands 7-6(6), 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. Haase committed just 17 unforced errors in four sets while Pospisil made 57 unforced errors. The 24-year-old Canadian is still in the doubles draw.
For her part, Wozniak faced a stiff opening round test against world no. 10 Dominika Cibulkova. She had lost her two previous meetings against the Slovak before today. The match was put on Centre Court and Cibulkova played at a very high level throughout, winning 6-1, 6-2 in 61 minutes. She hit 24 winners compared to 16 by Wozniak. The Canadian will move up in the rankings thanks to her three victories in qualifying.
Eugenie Bouchard (Westmount, QC), Frank Dancevic (Niagara Falls, ON), Sharon Fichman (Toronto, ON), and Milos Raonic (Thornhill, ON) will all be in action on Tuesday.
