US Open 2015—New York, U.S.A.
No. 26 seed Flavia Pennetta won her maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open on Saturday, defeating good friend and fellow Italian Roberta Vinci 7-6(4), 6-2. Announcing her retirement from tennis at the end of the year, Pennetta waited 49 Majors before winning her first title. The 33 year old will be ranked No. 12 in the world on Monday. Vinci, who defeated top seed Serena Williams in three sets on Friday, showed her on court charisma during the trophy ceremony. Known for her doubles prowess, Vinci ended Williams’ chance at a Calendar Year Slam.
