Pegula, Muchova Advance to US Open Quartfinals
Inform American Jessica Pegula advanced to the quarterfinals of the US Open on Monday, defeating No. 18 seed Diana Shnaider 6-3, 6-2.
Needing to bring her A game to the round of 16 encounter, Pegula hit 20 winners, struck five aces and broke her Russian opponent on five occasions.
Improving to 2-0 against Shnaider in lifetime meetings, Pegula will next face top seed Iga Swiatek or No. 16 seed Liudmila Samsonova.
Elsewhere, French Open and Wimbledon finalist Jasmine Paolini failed to reach the final eight after she lost to talented Czech player Karolina Muchova.
Advancing by a scoreline of 6-3, 6-3, Muchova hit 17 winners and broke her opponent on four occasions.
Improving to 4-0 against Paolini in lifetime meetings, Muchova will next face No. 22 seed Beatriz Haddad Maia or former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki.
Sinner vs. Paul Under the Lights
Top seed Jannik Sinner will attempt to make the quarterfinals of the US Open on Monday evening by getting past American hopeful Tommy Paul.
Leading Paul 2-1 in head-to-head meetings, Sinner currently stands at 51-5 on the season.
Paul, who will be attempting to reach his third Major quarterfinal, has won two titles on the year.
Other men’s matches on the day will include No. 5 seed Daniil Medvedev taking on Nuno Borges, No. 25 seed Jack Draper facing Tomas Machac, and No. 10 seed Alex de Minuar against Australian Jordan Thompson.
