Netflix Break Point curse claims eighth victim as Andy Murray knocks Thanasi Kokkanakis out of Australian Open

Just two of ten stars featured in documentary left in tournament by third round

Maria Sakkari tipped to be last player standing, according to latest odds via Fair Betting Sites

Thanasi Kokkinakis is the latest to fall foul to the Break Point curse with women’s sixth seed Maria Sakkari tipped to be the last player from the Netflix documentary to survive an Australian Open exit, according to odds via Fair Betting Sites.

The 26-year-old was sent packing after an incredible comeback from two sets down by Andy Murray – making him the eighth of ten players featured in the show to be knocked out before the third round.

The phenomenon has been touted as the ‘Netflix curse’ online, initially stemming from what is believed to be a similar situation in the popular Formula 1: Drive To Survive series where the broadcaster’s cameras supposedly caused bad luck on the drivers covered in each episode.

After early exits for the likes of Matteo Berretini, Casper Ruud, Paula Badosa and Ons Jabeur, only Maria Sakkari and Felix Auger Aliassime remain.

Odds on the last Brea Point player to stand at the Australian Open

Maria Sakkari 4/6

Felix Auger Aliassime 11/10

A spokesperson at Fair Betting Sites said: “The Netflix Break Point curse has been noted online as ‘the reason’ a number of tennis’ biggest superstars haven’t progressed in the Australian Open this week.

“Home favourite Nick Kyrgios was ruled out before the tournament through injury alongside Ajla Tomljanovi? and since, just two of the ten featured stars in the documentary have made it through to the third round in both the men’s and women’s singles.

“Casper Ruud, Ons Jabeur and Taylor Fritz made way earlier today. While Thanasi Kokkinakis was the most recent player to fall foul to the curse after Andy Murray beat him in five sets.

“Of the remaining two players, the women’s sixth-seed Maria Sakkari is the odds-on favourite to be the last player standing at the Australian Open, being expected to outlast Felix Auger Aliassime (6/4) also sixth seed in the men’s singles.”
