Musetti Keeps Turin Dream Alive; Advances to Semifinals in Athens
Talented Italian Lorenzo Musetti kept his dream alive of making the ATP Finals in Turin, Italy on Thursday, advancing to the semifinals in Athens, Greece with a straight set victory over Alexandre Muller.
Defeating the Frenchman 6-2, 6-4, Musetti will now face Sebastian Korda for a place in the finals on Friday. More importantly, Musetti needs to win the event to take over the eighth spot at the ATP Finals in Turin.
Currently, Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime occupies the eighth and final position for the season-ending event.
Elsewhere, top seed Novak Djokovic will return to action later today in Athens to take on No. 6 seed Nuno Borges from Portugal, and Marcos Giron will go up against Yannik Hanfmann from Germany.
WTA Finals Results
American star Jessica Pegula improved to 2-1 in the Group Stage of the WTA Finals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on Thursday, defeating two-time Major finalist Jasmine Paolini 6-2, 6-3.
The victory moves Pegula into the semifinals of the tournament. Pegula will finish No. 1 or No. 2 in the group depending on the outcome of the next match.
Still to come on Thursday, the day’s marquee encounter between top seed Aryna Sabalenka and No. 3 seed Coco Gauff will be a rematch of the French Open final earlier this year.
Sabalenka is 2-0 in the event so far, and Gauff stands at 1-1.
On Wednesday, both Amanda Anisimova and Elena Rybakina made the semifinals with respective victories. Anisimova defeated Iga Swiatek in three sets, and Rybakina took out Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-4, 6-4.
Rybakina has been the standout player of the event so far.
