US Open—Flushing Meadows, New York
Wednesday’s action at the US Open featured former winner Andy Murray advance to the third round after he outlasted unheralded American Emilio Nava, 5-7, 6-3, 6-1, 6-0.
Needed 90 minutes to finish the first set, Murray used his experience and fitness to outlast his 20-year-old opponent.
The three-time Major winner will next face No. 13 Matteo Berrettini, who ousted Hugo Grenier in four sets.
Elsewhere, No. 18 seed Alex de Minaur advanced, while No. 21 seed Botic van de Zandschulp was defeated by Frenchman Corentin Moutet, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4. Moutet advanced to the second round after he received a retirement victory over Stan Wawrinka.
Pedro Cachin won a barn-burner of a match against American Brandon Holt, 1-6, 2-6, 6-1, 7-6(1), 7-6(6). Holt, a qualifier, is the son of former US Open winner Tracy Austin.
On the women’s side, No. 3 seed Maria Sakkari dropped a two hour and 44 minute encounter to Xiyu Wang 3-6, 7-5, 7-5. Wang will next face American Alison Riske-Amritraj.
Other women’s results on the day saw No. 5 seed Ons Jabeur, No. 18 seed Veronika Kudermetova, No. 20 seed Madison Keys, No. 31 seed Shelby Rogers, Rebecca Marino, Shuai Zhang and Dalma Galfi all advancing to round three.
Still to come on Day 3 action at Flushing Meadows, Serena Williams, Daniil Medvedev and Nick Kyrgios will all attempt to advance to the round of 32.
Thursday’s action at the US Open will feature Rafael Nadal, Iga Swiatek and Carlos Alcaraz.
