Michelsen, Tien and Van Assche Win at Next Gen Finals

Next Gen ATP Finals presented by PIF—Saudi Arabia—Wednesday’s action at the Next Gen Finals in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia featured Alex Michelsen, Learner Tien and Luca Van Assche all picking up opening round robin victories.
First up, Van Assche scored a win by ousting No. 4 seed Juncheng Shang 4-3(3), 2-4, 4-1, 4-3(5). Hitting eight aces, Van Assche won 68 percent of his first serve points during the one hour and 56 minute contest.
Next up, Michelsen scored a four set victory over Nishesh Basavareddy, 2-4, 4-3(5), 4-3(4), 4-2.
Using his world-class backhand to great effect, Michelsen struck 27 winners during the one hour and 53 minute encounter.
The next match of the day saw powerful Czech Jakub Mensik fall in five sets to Tien 4-3(6), 4-3(3), 2-4, 2-4, 4-3(8).
Needing two hours and 17 minutes to advance, Tien overcame 24 aces and 49 winners from his opponent. The 19-year-old from Irvine, California won 67 percent of his first serve points.
Top seed Arthur Fils lost to No. 8 seed Joao Fonseca to end the day’s schedule. The Brazilian No. 8 seed ousted the Frenchman 3-4(9), 4-2, 4-1, 1-4, 4-1.
All the participants will return on Thursday for the next round of matches in Jeddah.
