Internazionali BNL d’Italia—Rome, Italy
Former US Open winner Daniil Medvedev captured his biggest clay court title to date on Sunday in Rome, Italy, defeating Holger Rune 7-5, 7-5 to win the Internazionali BNL d’Italia.
Needing one hour and 42 minutes to prevail, Medvedev used his patient baseline game to outlast his younger opponent.
Winning his sixth career Masters 1000 title, Medvedev struck five aces, won 76 percent of his first serve points and hit 21 winners in total.
Tying his head-to-head record with Rune at 1-1, Medvedev will now head to the French Open as the World No. 2.
Capturing 20 career titles, Medvedev also won events in Miami, Dubai, Doha and Marseille in 2023.
Rune, who was attempting to win his fifth career title, will enter Roland Garros as the No. 6 ranked player in the world.
The 20-year-old Dane defeated Novak Djokovic earlier in the event.
