Former finalist Daniil Medvedev reached the second round of this year’s Australian Open on Monday, defeating Terence Atmane 5-7, 6-2, 6-4, 1-0.
Medvedev will next face Emil Ruusuvuori for a place in round three.
Elsewhere, No. 7 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, No. 9 seed Hubert Hurkacz, No. 10 seed Alex de Minaur, No. 15 seed Karen Khachanov and No. 16 seed Ben Shelton all advanced to the second round.
No. 18 seed Nicolas Jarry fell in five sets to Flavio Cobolli and former world No. 1 Andy Murray suffered a disappointing first-round loss to No. 30 seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry.
Murray mentioned after the defeat that this could very well be his last Australian Open event.
On the women’s side, two-time former winner Naomi Osaka was defeated by talented French woman and No. 16 Caroline Garcia, 6-4, 7-6(2). Needing one hour and 26 minutes to advance, Garcia will next face Magdalena Frech in the next round.
Osaka was returning to competition after giving birth to her first child last year.
Other women’s results included No. 4 seed Coco Gauff, No. 6 Ons Jabeur, No. 10 seed Beatriz Haddad Maia and No. 19 seed Elina Svitolina all advancing.
No. 7 seed Marketa Vondrousova, No. 15 seed Veronika Kudermetova, No. 21 seed Donna Vekic and No. 24 seed Anhelina Kalinina were all ousted.
Tuesday’s schedule of play in Melbourne will feature top seed Iga Swiatek, No. 2 seed Carlos Alcaraz, No. 5 seed Jessica Pegula and No. 8 seed Holger Rune.
