Former world No. 1 and two-time French Open winner Maria Sharapova was denied a wildcard into the year’s second Major at Roland Garros on Tuesday. The decision, which was announced on Facebook by FFT president Bernard Giudicelli Ferrandini, came as a shock to many that believed the Russian would at the very least receive a wildcard into the qualifying draw.
Returning to action last month in Stuttgart after a 15-month doping ban, Sharapova is currently participating in the Italian Open in Rome, Italy. At present, Sharapova is ranked No. 211 in the world and will play Wimbledon qualifying as result of her first-round win in Rome this week.
The French Open will get underway on 28th in Paris, France.
