MacHac Upsets Alcaraz in Shanghai; Zheng Advances in Wuhan
Thursday’s action at the Rolex Shanghai Masters saw No. 3 seed Carlos Alcaraz crash out of the event, losing to No. 30 seed Tomas MacHac 7-6(5), 7-5.
Needing one hour and 54 minutes to prevail, MacHac followed up his victory over No. 11 seed Tommy Paul on Wednesday by adding five aces and 31 winners.
Reaching the fourth round of the US Open this year, MacHac also defeated Novak Djokovic at the Geneva Open earlier this season when he was world No. 1.
MacHac will next face the current world No. 1 Jannik Sinner in the semifinals.
Sinner continued his impressive winning streak over No. 5 seed Daniil Medvedev, defeating the Russian for the seventh time in eight meetings.
Prevailing by a scoreline of 6-1, 6-4, Sinner will be bidding for his seventh tournament victory this week in Shanghai.
Friday’s schedule will highlight four-time former winner Novak Djokovic taking on Jakub Mensik, and No. 7 seed Taylor Fritz will face David Goffin.
Goffin upset No. 2 seed Alexander Zverev on Wednesday.

Olympic Gold Medalist Qinwen Zheng reached the quarterfinals of the Wuhan Open on Thursday, defeating Canadian Leylah Fernandez 5-7, 6-3, 6-0. Needing two hours and 29 minutes to progress, Zheng hit five aces and broke serve on six occasions.
Zheng will next face No. 3 seed Jasmine Paolini. The Italian advanced past Erika Andreeva 6-3, 6-2.
Other winners on the day saw top seed Aryna Sabalenka dismiss Yulia Putintseva 1-6, 6-4, 6-0 and Xinyu Wang upset No. 2 seed Jessica Pegula 6-3, 7-5.
No. 4 seed Coco Gauff, No. 8 seed Daria Kasatkina and Hailey Baptiste also reached the quarterfinals.
Friday’s action will feature all four quarterfinal encounters.
