Monday’s action at Wimbledon featured a fantastic Centre Court clash between Aussie Nick Kyrgios and American Brandon Nakashima. With a quarterfinal place on the line, it was Kyrgios who prevailed 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(2), 3-6, 6-2 in three hours and 11 minutes. The 27-year-old hit 35 aces, won 78 percent of his first serve points and broke serve on three occasions.
Reaching his second quarterfinal at Wimbledon, Kyrgios will next face Cristian Garin, who upset No. 19 seed Alex de Minaur 2-6, 5-7, 7-6(3), 6-4, 7-6(6).
Elsewhere, No. 11 seed Taylor Fritz advanced to the quarterfinals, defeating Jason Kubler 6-3, 6-1, 6-4. Fritz will next face Rafael Nadal. The Spaniard dismissed Botic van de Zandschulp 6-4, 6-2, 7-6(6) in the last match of the day on Centre Court. Fritz defeated Nadal earlier this year during the Indian Wells final in March.
On the women’s side, Elena Rybakina reached the quarterfinals after she easily dispatched Petra Martic, 7-5, 6-3. Rybakina awaits Ajla Tomljanovic. Tomljanovic dispatched Cornet 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Other women’s on the day saw former winner Simona Halep dispatch No. 4 seed Paula 6-1, 6-2. Halep will next face either No. 20 seed Amanda Anisamova. The American defeated Harmony Tan 6-2, 6-3.
Tuesday’s schedule of play will feature Novak Djokovic vs. Jannik Sinner, No. 3 seed Ons Jabeur, No. 9 seed Cameron Norrie and David Goffin.
