Russian upstart Karen Khachanov captured his first-ever ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title on Sunday in Paris, France, defeating No. 2 seed Novak Djokovic 7-5, 6-4.
In a match that featured brute force from the young Russian, Khachanov showcased his power-game to the tune of nine aces and three breaks of serve. Winning 76 percent of his first serve points, Khachanov also saved four of five break points during the one hour and 37 minute match.
Tying his head-to-head with Djokovic at 1-1, Khachanov will move up to a career high of No. 11 in the world on Monday.
Djokovic, who was aiming to win his 33rd career Masters 1000 title, lost his first match since the Rogers Cup in Toronto, Canada. The new world No. 1 will next head to the ATP World Tour Final in London, England. The Serb will be in search of his sixth year-end title.
