Hurkacz, Berrettini Progress in Tokyo; Osaka Prevails in Beijing
Wednesday’s action at the ATP Tour event in Japan, Tokyo featured No. 2 seed Hubert Hurkacz and former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini reaching the second round of the event.
Hurkacz, who recently had knee surgery after Wimbledon, defeated American Marcos Giron 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-4.
Needing two hours and five minutes to advance, Hurkacz struck 17 aces and broke serve on three occasions.
Hurkacz will next face either Jack Draper or Mattia Bellucci.
Other winners on the day included Berrettini taking out Botic van de Zandschulp 6-3, 6-4, Ugo Humbert defeating Shintaro Mochizuki 6-1, 6-2 and Mariano Navone dismissing Luciano Darderi 6-4, 6-4.
Berrettini will await the winner of top seed Taylor Fritz vs. Arthur Fils, Navone will take on either Ben Shelton or Reilly Opelka and Humbert will face either Frances Tiafoe or Brandan Nakashima.
Osaka Prevails in Beijing
Four-time Major winner Naomi Osaka won her first match at the Beijing Open in China on Wednesday, defeating world No.77 Lucia Bronzetti 6-3, 6-2.
Osaka, who has had tough time regaining her form after returning to the Tour from having her first child, will hope for a strong end to the season under her new coach, Patrick Mouratoglou. The pair started working together after the US Open.
Osaka will next face No. 21 seed Yulia Putintseva.
Other winners on the day included Sofia Kenin, Katie Volynets, Taylor Townsend, Diane Parry and Alycia Parks.
