How to Choose Tennis Equipment for Beginners

Ruud Reaches US Open Semifinals; Has World No. 1 in Sights

by: John Brown

Tennis is an enjoyable sport that will help you stay fit and meet new friends. If you’ve just decided to play tennis, you might wonder what equipment you need to enjoy the game fully. Aside from having a good place to play and someone to play with, it would be best if you also had the essential clothing and equipment. That said, other than a racket, what else do you need?

Racket

A racket is a primary equipment you need to be able to play tennis. A good racket will set you back anywhere from $50 to $100. You can get cheap rackets within the $20–$30 price range, but their frames will be made of inferior material compared to the good ones. It’s best to invest in a good racket that lasts longer, and if you have extra money, you can buy two rackets, so you have a spare one in case you break a string.

If you need extra cash, you can get a loan today from online lending platforms like GetCash.com. With these platforms, you can borrow cash from $100 to $5,000, depending on how much is required.

Shoes

After a proper racket, good shoes are a must-have piece of gear when playing tennis. There are numerous styles and brands on the market, so picking the best for you can be tricky. However, when it comes to quality and comfort, Adidas, Nike, and Asics are well-known tennis shoe brands.

When choosing a tennis shoe type, you must consider your foot type and the type of court you’ll be playing in. For example, for tennis players with flat feet, tennis shoes that provide arch support while providing comfort are a must-have. Additionally, if you’ll mostly play on tennis courts made of cement or any other hard material, you need tennis shoes with a durable sole and cushioning and shock absorption features.

Balls

Picking the best tennis ball for you is just as important as choosing the best shoes and racket. Although they may all look similar, tennis balls are not made similarly. When picking out your tennis ball, you need to consider three things: your skill level, coating, and ball pressure. For beginners, we recommend recreational-level tennis balls that are pressureless.

When it comes to coating or ball coverage, it depends on the type of court you’ll be playing in. If you’re playing on a hard tennis court, you’ll need extra duty coverage tennis balls built for hard surfaces. For tennis balls that are durable and high quality, you can turn to brands like Wilson, Dunlop, and Penn.

Clothing

You can typically wear regular clothing if you’re playing on public courts. However, wearing clothes made specifically for playing tennis is still good. You need stretchy or loose clothes that allow you to move freely, and you need sweat-absorbing clothing since you’ll be sweating a lot.

If you’re playing in colder weather, you should ditch the shorts and opt for leggings or trousers and add a hoodie or tracksuit. If it’s hot outside, you can wear a cap or a visor for eye protection.
