Gasquet Claims Auckland Title; Kwon Wins Adelaide Title

Frenchman Richard Gasquet won his 16th career title in Auckland, New Zealand on Saturday, defeating No. 2 seed Cameron Norrie 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

In a match that lasted two hours and 27 minutes, Gasquet struck three aces, won 82 percent of his first serve points, broke serve on four occasions and hit 37 winners in total.

Never playing his higher ranked opponent before on Tour, Gasquet will rise to No. 42 in the world when Monday’s rankings are released. The 36-year-old last won a title in 2018 in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands.

Norrie, who is currently ranked No. 12 on the computer, was aiming to win his fifth career title. The Brit dismissed American Jenson Brooksby earlier in the event.

Lucky loser Soonwoo Kwon won his maiden career title on Saturday in Adelaide, Australia, dispatching two-time former winner and No. 4 seed Roberto Bautista Agut 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(4).

Needing two hours and 43 minutes to claim his crown, Kwon hit 11 aces, won 65 percent of his trips to the net, broke serve on three occasions and hit 42 winners in total.

Never playing his opponent on Tour, Kwon will rise to No. 52 in the world on Monday.

Bautista Agut, who has had a historically consistent career, was looking to win his 12th career title. The 34-year-old is currently ranked No. 25 in the world.
