Italian star Matteo Berrettini reached the fourth round of the US Open on Friday, ousting former winner Andy Murray 6-4, 6-4, 6-7(1), 6-3. Needing three hours and 47 minutes to advance, Berrettini fired 18 aces, won 74 percent of his first serve points and struck 55 winners.
The former Wimbledon finalist will next face Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. The Spaniard defeated Daniel Elahi Galan. 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4. Galan had dismissed No. 4 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first round.
Still to come on Day 5, tonight’s action in New York will feature Serena Williams, Daniil Medvedev and Nick Kyrgios.
On the women’s side, Wimbledon finalist and No. 5 seed Ons Jabeur reached the fourth round after dispatching No. 31 seed Shelby Rogers 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. The talented Tunisian will next face No. 18 seed Veronika Kudermetova, who easily dismissed Dalma Galfi 6-2, 6-0.
Other matches on the day saw Zhang Shuai dispatch Rebecca Marino, 6-2, 6-4.
Saturday’s action at the US Open will feature Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz.
