Roland Garros—Paris, France

Top seed Simona Halep captured her first Grand Slam title on Saturday in Paris, France, defeating No. 10 seed and reigning US Open champion Sloane Stephens 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. In a match that saw Stephens dominate the baseline rallies early on, Halep was forced to use her guile and experience to wear down her powerful opponent. Overcoming a set and break deficit, Halep stormed back to force a deciding set before establishing momentum. Racing out to a 5-0 lead, Halep won the match when Stephens hit an errant forehand.

Solidifying herself as the best player in the world, Halep also defeated former Grand Slam winners Garbine Muguruza and Angelique Kerber earlier in the event.

For Stephens, who was in search of her second Major title, the road to the finals included victories over Madison Keys and Daria Kasatkina.

Both Halep and Stephens will now set their sights on grass-courts of London, England as they prepare for Wimbledon.

The Wimbledon Championships begin on July 2.

Simona won because she thought she was going to lose and that made her exhale and play freely. Sloane had it and then let it slip by not being aggressive enough after a set and break up. Halep did well to play more aggressive than usual, and never giving up … http://www.138mph.com/french-open-tennis-final-analysis-of-the-final-between-simona-halep-and-sloane-stephens/
