Goffin Defeats Shapovalov to Advance at Atlanta Open
Canadian star Denis Shapovalov was ousted in the second round of the Atlanta Open on Monday, losing to former top tenner David Goffin 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
Needing two hours and five minutes to advance, Goffin used his supremely talented game to strike nine winners, win five points at net and break serve on four occasions.
Shapovalov, who is currently ranked No. 140 in the world, was ranked as high as No. 10 in September of 2020.
Goffin will next face either Max Purcell or Christoper O’Connell for a place in the in quarterfinals.
Other winners on the day saw No. 5 seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina defeat Arthur Cazaux 6-2, 7-6(4), and Yoshihito Nishioka ousted Zachary Svajda 7-6(4), 6-3.

Monday’s action at the Generali Open in Kitzbuhel, Austria saw No. 8 seed Laslo Djere defeat Vit Kopriva 7-6(6), 6-3.
The Serbian hit six aces during the one hour and 40 minutes contest. Djere will next face Thiago Seyboth Wild, who dismissed wildcard Joel Schwaerzler 6-2, 7-6(6).
Other results on the day saw Nicolas Moreno De Alboran, Sumit Nagal and Yannick Hanfmann reach the round of 16.

Plava Laguna Croatia Open Umag—Umag, Croatia
Up-and-coming talent Jakub Mensik powered his way into the second round of the Umag, Croatia event on Monday, ousting Alexei Popyrin 6-3, 6-2.
Mensik, who possesses world-class strokes, struck six aces, hit 22 winners, and broke serve on three occasions during the one hour and 23 minute encounter.
Mensik will face either Luciano Darderi or Duje Ajdukovic for a place in the quarterfinals.
The day’s other result featured Thiago Monteiro defeating No. 7 seed Tomas MacHac 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
